The construction of solid sandstone buildings is not widespread in the Central European climate. In order to achieve legally approved insulation values and the necessary static stability, the walls must be fifty centimeters or thicker. For dry stone walls in the garden and on the property sandstone is an ideal choice.
A Living StoneIf you plan to build a sandstone wall that will support another building such as a roof or a stone arch, a concrete foundation is recommended to help with static stability and to provide an insulating layer against de-icing salt.
Weight and Price
In comparison to other rocks, especially in the hard stone area, the weight of sandstone is low. A cube weighing twenty centimeters in the side weighs between 15 and 18 kilograms. For one square meter of wall area, it is necessary to calculate with about 400 kilograms of sandstone, with larger depths with correspondingly more.
The high amount of sandstone around the world makes it a cheap rock. The price of sandstone depends on the frequency of occurrence and the cost of mining. In principle, special optical features such as colorations, for example in the green, red or blue range, increase the price. Expressive textures are another major factor.
In addition to the pure material price, the costs for a sandstone wall are composed of the type of pre-processing, the transport costs and the cost of delivery. For this purpose, impregnating agents and possibly mortar must be taken into account.
