The two decisive characteristics of the stainless steel chimney are the discharge of exhaust gases and self-heating. Both operations involve a latent risk of fire and smoke. In order to guarantee safe operation, the legislator has issued precise regulations on the distance to building parts.
DW-Va chimney and approval letter
If the stainless steel chimney is a free metal chimney, a double-walled vent tube is used during assembly. For these constructions mentioned in the technical terminology DW-Va chimney some minimum clearances are prescribed for all types of construction. Specific structural situations and conditions can lead to extended legal requirements at any time, which the responsible chimney sweep knows.
A stainless steel chimney can be fixed and guided on a floor or in a pure wall mounting. The first central requirement for the distance is the distance to the mounting wall crucial. It is set by law to at least ten inches. If the wall or roof gable is made of combustible materials such as wood, extended clearance rules may apply. The manufacturer of the chimney must do this in a letter of acceptance.
Windows, doors and wall ducts
The smallest possible distance between the metal slit and the window and door openings is twenty centimeters in each direction. Here additional fire regulations must be observed, which may require higher distance. For wall penetrations at exhaust gas temperatures up to 400 degrees Celsius, a distance of forty centimeters applies to the wall. With professional insulation between wall and metal body or stainless steel tube with at least two inches of strength of the prescribed distance drops to ten centimeters.
Distances in the roof structure
The following minimum clearances apply to the upper part of the stainless steel chimney:
- 1.5 meters lateral distance to window openings
- 1.5 meters lateral distance to dormers
- 1.5 meters lateral distance to roof terrace or balcony
- 1 meter vertical distance above the roof openings
- 1 meter distance between the opening and the roofing diagonal
- 40 centimeters between the mouth opening and roof ridge
The maximum distance between the last wall attachment and the chimney mouth depends on the diameter of the vent. With a diameter of up to forty centimeters, three meters are required, with diameters exceeding 2.50 meters.Tips & TricksBefore each installation of a chimney or a chimney, you should submit the construction plan to your responsible chimney sweep for review.
