How to lay decking

Wooden decking can easily be laid by yourself. So you can conjure up in front of the house in no time a great terrace, from which the summer can be really enjoy. But you have to pay attention to a few things.

Background information

Decking boards always require a substructure to mount them on. As a rule, such a substructure consists of wooden beams that are laid and fastened transversely to the decking, thus forming a solid supporting structure.

This structure must in any case be on a solid, non-yielding surface. Both concrete and screed concrete layers, which may already be present in previous terraces, are suitable here. And of course, a wooden terrace can also be implemented on your own balcony. Here, however, attention must be paid to the threshold height. If there is no load-bearing ground, a gravel bed with a point foundation is usually created.

Different mounting options for decking

Decking boards can either be fastened to the substructure with stainless screws or with mounting clips that connect the individual decking boards. Note that there are different clips for the first row of boards and each other.

Holes pose a risk - on the one hand, because moisture can penetrate here, on the other hand, because of the risk of injury, especially if you walk barefoot on the terrace. Although mounting clips are a little more expensive, but optically more beautiful and above all safer.

Different threshold heights

Outside wooden decks usually have the same design or construction height. You can vary the threshold height of your terrace on a non-concreted ground by removing an appropriate amount of soil beforehand. Thus, even terraces without any threshold height, so-called decks, easily build.

Step-by-step instructions for the terrace made of wood

  • Material for the foundation as a point foundation on a gravel bed See under wooden decking Substructure
  • Plastic base - if desired
  • Supporting structure - squared lumber
  • Decking
  • Side panels
  • Screws, not rusting
  • Angle connector and longitudinal connector for supporting structure , galvanized or stainless steel
  • ev. clips for fixing planks without drill holes
  • cordless screwdriver
  • measuring tape
  • spirit level
  • suitable jigsaw, chop saw or other suitable saw tool
  • ev. hammer drill for fixing the structure

1. Preparation of the substructure

If you want to build your terrace on the garden floor without any existing fortification, you must first create a load-bearing base - such as a gravel bed and a point foundation. The easiest way to do that, and what you need to do, is explained in detail under HOLZTERRASSE UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Trag 2. Structural structure

First of all, place the lower beams and their connecting beams - transverse to the later laying direction of the decking boards - and screw them together using angled and longitudinal connectors until the construction is stable.

3. Making a slope

In order for the rainwater to run off and not jam against the wall of the house and cause long-term severe moisture damage, you must still make an at least one percent incline. The easiest way to do this is to attach height-adjustable plastic bases under the structure, setting it at a height difference of about one centimeter per meter. You can also reach the slope by knocking on the concrete slabs of the point foundation. This will make the whole construction a bit lower, but the method requires some skill, especially for large terraces.

4. Installing the decking

Now you can simply screw on the decking boards or fix them with mounting clips. Be sure to screw the mounting clips on the substructure in the correct direction and to use the so-called starting clips for the first row of boards. The last row of boards is best secured with screws screwed in at a 45 ° angle. For very hard woods - such as Bankirai - you should always pre-drill.

Tips & Tricks Do not use galvanized metal parts for Bankirai to fix - Angle connectors, screws and straight connectors should be made of stainless steel as zinc will react with Bankirai wood and cause ugly black spots on the wood.
