How to lay your cobblestones yourself

Cobblestone is made of a natural material and is therefore particularly suitable if you want to design your outdoor area with a combination of paths and plantings. The most common rocks for such a patch are granite, basalt and porphyry. These rocks have a very high strength and ensure your ways an extremely long life.
However, when laying cobblestones, you will be confronted with a few peculiarities that you must follow.
To lay the cobblestones you need chess tools or a mini excavator, a vibrating plate, a rubber and paving hammer as well as a spirit level and tape measure. Their auxiliary materials consist of weed fleece, coarse gravel, laying sand, as well as joint splits or joint sand.

Step 1: the substructure

Hatch your future path 40cm deep. Store the topsoil for reuse separately from the other excavation. Create a 5cm thick layer of coarse gravel that you compact with the vibrating plate.
Lay out the weed fleece on this layer. Then follow another 20cm of coarse gravel, which you also compact thoroughly.

Step 2: the edge boundary

Cobblestone is not laid in the composite like concrete paving. The outer stones are therefore not tip over and must be attached. You can do this by limiting your coarse gravel bed on the flanks with deep shelves in lean concrete laying. But you can also protect the flanks with a bevelled concrete banquet after paving.

Step 3: Laying

Cobblestone is made of natural material and each stone varies in height. Therefore, it is not worthwhile to deduct a uniform grit bed. Use laying sand, which you distribute with the shovel. The final thickness must be adjusted individually for each stone. Fix the stones with a rubber mallet about 8mm higher than the ground level. Check with the spirit level again and again whether the gradient is uniform.

Step 4: Joint Closure and Settlement

Sweep over a special joint sand or grout with a coarse broom over the pavement. When all the joints are filled, water the plaster with the garden hose, which compresses the material in the joints.
Finally, ram the stones with the vibrating plate and rubber pad until you have reached the ground level.
